The U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution held a hearing Tuesday that examined the current proposals under consideration to curb gun violence. Dr. Suzanna Hupp, survivor of a 1991 mass shooting in Killeen, Texas, was among the panelists who spoke about the constitutionality of universal background checks on gun buyers, banning assault weapons and limiting bullet cartridges. “Honestly, I don’t view myself as a victim of gun violence,” she said simply. “I view myself as a victim of a maniac who happened to use a gun as a tool, and I view myself as a victim of the legislators at the time who left me defenseless.” Dr. Suzanna Hupp became a case study in gun control after testifying in front of Congress as a survivor of the 1991 “Luby” massacre in Texas where both of her parents were killed.... In the intervening years, Hupp has become a staunch advocate for concealed-carry, and was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1996. After six terms, in 2006, she chose not to seek re-election.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzanna_Hupp

When I left for Korea in '89, I left my bike at a shop in Killeen. When I returned to the states 1-1/2 years later I was assigned to Redstone Arsenal. I set up a trip to TX to get my bike. After scheduling my trip, things changed at work and I was able to leave a week earlier than originally planned. Megan and I headed for TX and spent a couple of days visiting friends while staying at a motel down the street from Luby's. I picked up the bike the morning of 9 Oct. We had lunch at Luby's before hitting the road for the return trip. At 12:30, 9 October Megan and I had just sat down in the restaurant. At 12:45, 16 October Hennard crashed into the restaurant and started shooting. If my trip happened as originally planned we could well have been in Luby's on 16 October. When I heard about the massacre on the news it scared the shit out of me. 16 October 1991 is when I "woke up" and made the decision to not be an unarmed victim in the future.
