    Posted: 09 September 2005 at 1:18am

I just got word last night that more of the trails in Estill Fork have been closed. The creekbeds that everyone have been climbing around Frankie's cabin now have trees cut across them. I knew it would happen , I just didn't know how long it would take for the landowners to get pissed enough to block the trails off.

I can't blame the landowners . I would be mad too if people were trashing my property  like they were down there.

Those creekbeds were some of the best trails I have seen. Now they're closed  I guess Estill Fork is (or was ) the last good wheeling spot in our area . Looks like if we want to go wheeling we're gonna have to drive 4 hours away just to find some good trails.

This is the 4th wheeling spot in our area that has been closed in the last 2 years. Cowan , Coppenger cove , coalmine , now Estill Fork.

This SUCKS !

This is a shame, but not unexpected.

The land your talking about is currently for sale, or at least much of it.  Check this link, and scroll down to the bottom of the page - they have actual topo maps showing the plots that are for sale, acreages, etc.  The trails you are talking about are located in or near the boundaries of compartments 10, 11 and 14.....I believe.

I looked at the topo , and the trails that I am talking about are not part of what's for sale. The waterfall down from the cabin and the creekbed up past the cabin both have trees cut across them. Also , we were there last saturday and someone had thrown sheet metal screws all in one of the creekbeds. Clint just happened to see them or we would have had some flat tires.

What is to stop RCRC from buying several tracts in this area for the sole purpose of trail riding?

We could even set up something like what Coal Creek has eventually..This area REALLY needs a place to ride that is under the control of a large group that cares about things like "tread lightly" and keeping the land clean!

Sounds more like the latter is the reason it was closed (And Cowan was closed longer than a year ago).

Yes they do. It is really going to be a PIA for me to get an immediate offroad fix when I get back from this sand-box. It really is a shame. The worst part is that a lot of the people on this site are guilty of causing this. There are quite a few who help, as well. You know who you are.

We need to all take responsibility for our actions. Do the right thing. Whe you see others screwing up, take the time to politely and diplomatically point it out to them. Leave the land cleaner than you found it.

A lot of people sit around, and loudly voice their disgust with all the trail closings....well, give your keyboard a rest, jump in your rig with a box of trashbags, and go clean up! If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Sorry for the rant, guys. I just felt it needed to be said.

Go talk to your bank and see what they would finance and for how long. My bank said 20% down and 5 year note or 30% down and 10 year note. Example: 100 acres@ $1000/acre=$100,000 min. $30,000 down   $777/month with 6% interest 10 year note.

I'd be more in favor of 10 people pitching in $10k cash each (or unsecured personal loans) and buying it outright ;)

Who owns the property now???  If we talked to him directly and voiced our own opinions about the amount of crap he has to deal with on his property he might just agree with us and allow us to wheel out there more often if we organize a cleanup day once or twice a year.  Now we havent had to get loans or beg and plead to open the land.  Now we are active in correcting our image and helping another guy maintain his land which he/ or she may be grateful for giving that they probably drive some stock 2wd f150 that can't get to the problem areas in question.  Furthermore we would have consent and an open invitation to visit this property and maybe,  with the agreement with the land owner,  expand the wheelable terrain in the area.  But then again I may be just dreaming.  Or maybe I have not gotten to see these trails before and I don't want to give up on something I haven't driven across before.  Anyway food for thought (and it didn't cost me or anyone dollars-per-month)

We have permission from at least one of the landowners in Estill Fork - I spoke with him in person.  The problem is the other landowners, who own the entrances, and who have closed these areas before.  The one I talked to (no name in this forum) had spent several thousand dollars in legal costs against the owners who had gated the area, because he wanted it open.  If the gates do go up, I will approach him again about written permission, which will get us a key.

So there are some good folks out there.

If any of yall know anyone who owns land up there, lets talk offline and approach the owners for permission.  Like Sean said, we can offer cleanup....and show them the evidence of the cleanup we have already done.

in estill fork the problem isnt the guys on the alabama side its some of the guys who hunt on the tn side not even land owners

there are a couple of land owners on top of kieth springs that had it gated but the guys in the bottom wanted it open and after 2 years in court it was ungated

now the guys at the top want it gated again and so do the peole who hunt alot of the tn side

one owner was selling land to his buddies for $1 so he could have more landowners on his side in the case

the cabin guys have been in it with some other guys for a while and its a huge mess between landowners, hunting clubs and off roaders

Hey, Scott, glad to have you back!!  Please, tell me what you have in the way of ideas for land purchase - we are all interested!!  RCRC will consider any ideas along these lines.  We have some money, and it was raised for this purpose, but we dont seem to be able to find any land that we can afford!

Why not?  He's a member and isn't throwing any rocks.  I don't see a problem.

Getting back to the issue at hand, there's a post in the Member's only on who one AL club got access to a sizeable piece of land.  We need to make it a priority to find out how they did it.

One of the members of that club is named "crapzuk", who has made 20 posts on this forum.  I'm going to PM him and ask him to post his experience on getting this land for his club.

To keep from having to sort through all of this thread, I'll ask him to create a new one.
