From Slashdot:
Mississippi Governer Haley Barbour signed a bill into law on Friday which instituted a ban on automated cameras that would snap pictures of motorists when they ran red lights. "The new law says the two cities that already have the cameras, Jackson and Columbus, must take them down by Oct. 1. Other cities and counties are banned from starting to use them." We've discussed situations in the past where cities looked at such cameras as "profit centers," and even tampered with their traffic light timing to catch more motorists. Now, in Mississippi, the contractors who installed the cameras are unhappy, since they received a cut of the ticket revenue generated by the cameras. However, lawmakers overwhelming voted to get rid of them (117-3 in the House, 42-9 in the Senate), because "the cameras were an invasion of privacy and their constituents thought they had been unfairly ticketed."

Awesome.  They had these when I lived in San Diego, and found out that the contractor had rigged them to generate more revenue.  The city had to pay back 300 tickets they had collected from motorists.  Bad situation.

I never understood how they could write a car a ticket. My understanding is that the cameras take snap shots of the license plates as the car ran the light. I dont' see how they can prove who is driving. It is my understanding that if the car enters the intersection on the yellow it is leagal. I know they told us in driving school that if you are the first car in line waiting to turn left even if the light changes you have the right of way to clear the intersection. It just seems like there are too many gray areas for it to be legal to have cameras at intersections that hand out tickets in the mail.

Per HPD officer, the rule is that your front tires can be over the white line when the light turns red and you're OK.  If you cross the line after it turns red, you can get a ticket.

I'm not sure what the answer is to this problem, but they need to do something.  When was the last time you were sitting at an intersection and your light turns green, but you have to wait on 4 more cars to clear the intersection before you can proceed???  Makes me wish I had a big truck with an I-beam mounted on front to teach them the consequences of milking the red light.  Angry

The other side of this coin is when I'm trying to stop because the light has turned to yellow and I've got those four cars behind me that just about run me over because they figured they would be able to get through the intersection without stopping.

Yep!  Damned if you do and damned if you don't.  When Paul & I were visiting his sister in Phoenix several years ago, she actually warned us to NOT slow down on yellow because we would get rear-ended.

Once again we have proof that Mississippi isn't last in every category! Being I am originally from the Magnolia State, I've known this for years. You do, however, run significant risk of encountering police roadblocks for the purposes of public safety.
