I liked a comment made a few days ago made by an "expert" on Fox News discussing the shooting of the pirates.  He was talking about military snipers and said that a 1000 meter shot is "easy" today.  "Easy"??  I wonder how many 1000 meter shots this guy has made.  I doubt he's even made a 300 meter shot.  Anyone think he's shot 100 meters?

The Marines have historically generally done a better job training their recruits on BRM (Basic Rifle Marksmanship) than the Army does.  Keep in mind that the USMC has a much higer "tooth to tail" ratio for fighters vs support troops as compared to the other services.  I'm not that familiar with the services' sniper training; but I would hazard a guess that there's not much difference in sniper training.  There's certainly not much difference in sniper quality.  Army and USMC snipers are busting Jihadis at comparable (and quite impressive) ranges in the middle east.

Army uses 40 rounds to Qualify and the Marines use 250. I think the Marines shot 500M targets and I know the Army only shot 300M. But the way the Army qualification is set up they don't even have to shot the 250M or 300M targets to Qualify. As for the shooter in the Picture. He would not use muffs in the field (he has earplugs). The trigger finger is probily were it is because he just fired a round (you can see it flying out), therefore he is not getting ready to squeeze the trigger. As for his left hand, there are many ways to shot from the prone. Everybody does it a little different. But it seems to me that he is using the left hand to make sure that 50 is pulled tight into the shoulder (since a 50 kicks like a mule). You would not want to do all the pulling with the trigger hand. But ha thats just me.

And this, my friends, is why you strive to hold that weapon tight to your shoulder:

All this US miltitary rivalry is silly, its the Canadians that hold the record for the longest confirmed sniper shot.

The longest range recorded for a sniper kill currently stands at 2,430 meters (2,657 yd, or 1.51 miles), accomplished by Master Corporal Rob Furlong, a sniper from Newfoundland, Canada, in March 2002 during the war in Afghanistan. Furlong made this record-breaking kill while he was participating in Operation Anaconda. He was a member of the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). To make the kill, he used a .50 caliber BMG (12.7 mm) McMillan TAC-50 bolt-action rifle.
