I had one of those things. It wasn't a looker but it ran like a champ. It had a tough little engine, the AMC 258 - sound familar? Unless I remember poorly it was the first US auto with a hatch back. There's a lime green one out in my neck of the woods that I see on the road once in a while.

I'm loving it!!! I would drive the wheels off of that thing.
Only AMC cooler than a gremlin is a half cab 4wd pacer.

That was my father's first car. It was also the first car my mom totaled.
My dad actually worked for AMC back then and got a car off the demo plan. It was actually a Gremlin X with the v8, but was not labeled as such. It must have been a sleeper. We bought another one as a second car after getting our 1977 Monarch, but it wasn't in as good shape. I actually searched for a Gremlin like my dad's to give him as a surprise gift at one point, but I never found one.
