I'm trying to help my buddy with his 71 GMC bus. It needs transmission fluid added but we are not sure what fluid it needs. It is a Detroit Diesel mated to a Allison vs 2-8 with a GM V-drive. If any of y'all have any ideas on what fluid it runs it would be helpful.

I spent a bunch of time searching, and didnt find much of anything except one site which will sell you a manual for $60 The tranny appears to be a VS2 series 8, they made two of that version, a 8.1 and 8.2  Its listed as a VS2 tranny, version 8.something. Allison lists it in the form "VS2-8" but they dont have any online manuals that I could find.  Based on other trannys of the period, it would be dexron II.

Thanks Doc. What is making us wonder is it is black like oil with no hint of red like atf. We are wondering if it could be some light weight motor oil or some kind of hydraulic fluid. If it is Dexron II could it just be old enough that it looks black? It looks like it has been at least 10 years since the transmission filters have been changed.

I think you answered your own question right there!  Its probably burned and full of crap.

Here's the manuals http://www.coachinfo.com/Manuals/General/Transmission.html

There are some bus RV forums out there where they discuss this old stuff....

Yeah i found one forum but to start your own thread they have to approve your account so I am waiting for approval. It doesn't smell burnt in any way but it is definitely a possibility. We are just trying to make sure we don't put the wrong stuff in and create any expensive problems. Thanks again for the help Doc.

Give Sterling a call in Madison. When I I worked on Garbage trucks they all ran Allison with synthetic fluid. Even though yours is old they may have info on it. You seem to have all the right info on this trans. If Sterling can't help call around a few diesel shops.
