NP205 COMING SOON - Coming soon means its getting shifters built as we speak. 32 spline input is stronger than the 10 spline male to male that Im sure your running. Not to menton the way I have it mounted , It wont break the adapter.

Hey man, those 2 guys that asked you for gas on the sport quads weren't my buddies, i finally asked them.
I know a lot of people will be coming up at the stairsteps, but is anyone coming up the side where all the smaller rocks are, the side that's a few hundred yards of rocks before you get to the dugout..... i have no idea what this side is called anymore??

Okay, that helps me a lot. What i call the dug out must be clay hill then, cause as soon as you pass it you turn left and head up to the strip mines.
So then the rocky side up the mountain is actually called coalmine? Gotcha.
Is anyone else going up that way?

Its been about 8 years since I rode up that way , but if I remember right you gotta go up behind Paul Fowlers house , cross a creek and head up . You come out at the other side of the power line. I dont even know if that way is fit for a rig, as the last time I went that way it was on a honda. Nick may know.....

Our Property backs up to the creek & then goes up the mountain. We have some cool logging roads on the other side of the road.

Far as I know there is no legal access to come in from dry creek. My cousin's in-laws used to own the land at the bottom of that trail and we would park on it and ride atv's up to his buddies cabin to camp. The land they owned has since been sold, so I haven't been that way in years. I would think it would be best to stay away unless you have permission.

I was riding with people that owned land on Dry Creek side. So permission wasnt an issue for me, I was just asking if one got permission from a landowner, if the trail was fit for a rig. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks, Nick. Our property is next to Dry Creek hunting club, there is probably no way to get there from our property. I was just interested in where it was located, I thought maybe it was the powerline. I'm not from this area just getting an idea where things are located.

The way we used to go up was a little ways before you get to the powerlines on the left side of the road. There was an old house place that my cousin's wife's family owned along with quite a bit of land. He had a buddy who owned a cabin up on the mtn that we camped in. That was the only way I have ever been up on that side and the road was basically just wide enough for an ATV. That was several years ago and I don't know anything about it now so I just stay out.

No problem. I just wanted to make it clear that I don't have permission to go in from dry creek anymore and I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression.
There are a few landowners on the coalmine/bingham mtn areas that are totally against offroaders in general. I totally understand their frustration, but they are laying the blame in the wrong place. Probably everyone on this website and definately all RCRC members are not the ones causing problems and trashing their land. RCRC has hauled TONS of trash off that mountain and probably not a single piece was left by the people on this site. Even so, since there is no www.drunkenidiotsonATV's.com they get on the local 4wd club website (which is us) and assume that everyone that rides out there is a member. RCRC has tried to be more than cooperative with the fellow landowners, but some refuse to even talk to us and continue to slander our name. Our club could be a valuable asset to the landowners if they were willing to work with us.
People who are passionate about this sport are generally good stewards of the land. It's the people who just go to get drunk and tear something up that give all off roaders a bad name. These people would not even consider joining a 4wd club, but still we get blamed for others actions. The actions of a few can ruin it for everyone.
All of us on here need to get the word out to to the general off roading public that if they don't start respecting peoples property there is not gonna be anywhere left to go. When I got into this sport about 10 years ago you could ride about anywhere. Now days it's hard to find somewhere to go at all. Even places I regarded as public land , such as Tellico are under the gun. It's a crying shame that my 2yr old son will never even get to see some of the places I've enjoyed.
Sorry for the long post, but I'm tired of seeing gates go up and trails being shut down because of the actions of a few who won't respect others. Like I said, I don't think anyone on this site is part of the problem, but we need to get the word out to those who are. If we don't, nobody will until it's too late and another gate goes up somewhere else.

The same thing (club being blamed for litter) has been happening at Monteagle with the Damn Locals in Coppinger Cove. The land owners assume that since theres a 4x4 organization in the area , that everybodys a part of it, including the people throwing out all their trash. I think TNMAN (Locals Prez) had a meeting with the landowners a while back to clear thier name. That might be what ya'll have to do if you havent done so already.

I and three other guys wound up on that route once, coming down from the top. We were stopped and escorted off the property by a landowner. It wasnt at gunpoint, but he had a gun, and he basically told us that we could go out with him or Richard Brown (the major property owner at the base of the mtn) would have us arrested. We left and havent been back.

Ok so Im a lil concerned. I have always been up there by going in through Killingsworth Cove. Is that a legal way to go in? I have been up there typically in my Jeep and occasionally with one other rig.

TECHNICALLY its tresspassing. Part of the stairsteps trail is actually a county road, but not all of it, and once you get off the county ROW, you're on private property, no different than someone's yard in Cliff Cove subdivision. The issue is whether or not the actual landowners want to push the tresspass. Its my understanding of the law in Alabama (and I am no lawyer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express....once....) if you are on someone's property, and its not your property, if you dont have written permission from that landowner in your possession, you are tresspassing. But someone has to a) catch you and b) press the charge. Generally, no one does unless they have some reason to do so. Also, in Alabama, you cannot prevent someone from accessing their legally owned/deeded property - but that access does not have to be convenient. As as far as I know, this does NOT apply to a lease.
Again, this is anecdotal, from talking to a lawyer and from talking to someone who manages lots of the land in the area in question.
Some will say, "I've been going there for years!" So what, that means nothing. This country's laws are based on private ownership of land, and the laws and law-enforcement folks all must respect that private ownership...most of the time. You go there purley at the pleasure of the landowners whose land you are crossing.

Thanks for the info. Now my question is How do I go about getting permission to go up there using this route. Or better yet, which way is the legal way ? The last thing I want to do is get nailed for trespassing. That is one of my favorite places to go here locally so I it would be nice to be able to continue riding there.

coal mine landowners are battleing everyone and each other right now to keep the gat locked
as far as i know if you aint with a land owner or own land anyway you go up is trespassing
the new market side is county to the gate and no further and gated and now they have made bypassing it impossible with large rocks and ditches so good luck

That's discouraging. Judging by your name on here i'm assuming you are one of the Payne's. I've heard of yall and seen some of your rigs. And if YOU are saying good luck getting up there, sounds like i need to pay attention to this.

Is your XJ locked?
Welcome to the forum btw. The trail I've been on I was able to manage pretty well on 33's with open diffs and IFS. As to what trail I was on... I couldn't tell ya. I was just following the next rig in front of me. I'm still trying to figure out where the heck we were.

It would depend on the weather and how recently it has rained. I think you would be ok with a lil help in the tougher spots, if it is somewhat dry.

yeah landowners have been at it for a while and now are going at each other.
the county hauled gravel for the road to the gate, but after that a private contractor was hired to build/maintain the road by the landowners association.
if they leave it open you can get up but if locked who knows about a key to get in or out cause they have changed locks a couple of times recently. dont know about other routes up like stairsteps. havent been there in a while.
from what i understand the hurricane side you can take a 2wd to clay hill if you can get in

tried stairsteps yesterday after all the rain got up pretty far but there was no traction at all on the rocks. we had to turn around after the first big area of rocks after the mud. dont know if ill be trying it again. maybe it would be easier when it was dry but it seems to me youd need 35s to make it all the way. anybody ever made it with 31s and open diffs?

I would really like to go to that, but its the same night as the city planning commish meeting whee they are going to talk about the subdivision that is planned for my backyard.
EDIT - the developer has pulled the proposal (again, second time) so no need to go to City Hall, so I am going to try to go to this.

After listening to what everyone has to say about riding on coalmine, we're gonna end up doing the right thing and going somewhere to ride legal. Like others have said, I don't want to worry about getting my truck towed or getting fined for riding somewhere.
We're going to wilborn's that saturday, april 11th, and riding 4wheelers. If anyone else is interested let me know. I'd love to have some others join us.

I know at least one of the property owners will be there wheeling with the rest of us. That's how I actually heard about the Easter Run before coming here. I was invited to come by him and I don't think trespassing is going to be an issue for that day. The group with him is actually going Friday afternoon and staying in a cabin on his land.
I may spend most of the day just watching the others, taking pictures and doing some cleanup. Maybe that will ease the hostility from the few owners that don't want us there. I've not been to Coalmine yet so I have no idea as to what the trail or trails are like. Being IFS and open diff, my rig's abilities are pretty limited. I have no problems standing on the side and spectating while the big boys play.

Does anyone know for sure that the ride is the 11th? Last year the cops were mostly stopping folks pulling trailers. I'm interested in going up Coal mine but don't know how to get there. We went up Bingham last year. I really got pissed last year at the guys (who I know) who took the car up and then let his girlfriend kill it so they decided to flip it over and let folks drive across it. That's what you get for mixing pills and beer...great judgement for fun. People like that ruin it for folks like us who jsut want to go have a fun day of clean (sober) riding and care about the land.

The ride is definitely the 11th. Not sure if I'm going to make it or not now. Gotta wait on the doctor's to clear me (or my leg to stop hurting).

Is this coalmine the same area that RCRC runs at the Cove or is this another area completely?
Just curious. I'm out of town this weekend, but was curious just so I knew what area was being discussed.

That sucks for the gate on CoalMine. My parents used to go when I was little but I've never been myself. Guess I'll just have to stick to Bingham.

So, is there a ride going on tomorrow? And if so where do you all meet up to ride over?
I had told some friends here that I would go watch a Rugby game tomorrow but I think I could get out of it to ride up there. But I don't have tow hooks on the front of my jeep yet and I know it says that I need those to ride with you all. I don't have any come-a-longs but I figured if I went with yall you'd let me borrow some if I got stuck!

This is not an RCRC club ride, but rather an annual public event that takes place.
P.S. Whether you ride tomorrow or ride with us later in this area, it's got plenty of mud holes, so you'll need tow hooks unless you're fond of camping in your jeep.

We were at the powerlines from about 10:30 until about 1:30. We then drove up towards coalmine and I thought I heard a big hellicopter flying low. Did the accident happen at the powerlines?

The guy who told me about it was headed from the powerlines to go off Bingham and came upon the accident somewhere in between. He said the boy was on the back of an ATV with his grandfather. This is terrible. I can't imagine losing a child.

Yep, lots of ATV's there this year. Also a lot of kids and families there too. They all were a pretty well behaved bunch. I saw lots of people having fun and I didn't see anyone acting stupid. Actually saw some kids with trash bags picking up trash at the powerlines. When we came back through the powerlines right at dark, just about everyone had left and the place was pretty clean. I think there was more people there last year; but the weather was a lot better last year. We had a great time and saw several folks we know; damn shame about the young boy.

as of last nite he wasn't dead. Lack of pupals to indicate probibility of him being brain-dead though.

I've heard several stories. The most common one was the 4-wheeler just rolled. Could have happened to anyone. I don't like to think how many times I've pulled a front tire off the ground taking a turn to fast on mine.

I'm sure their pain is much worse than being shot right now and it's a pain they will have to live with the rest of their lives. My heart goes out to them, regardless of how the accident happened...

Here is the deal with the little boy who got injured. My husband is a Woodville fireman and we were up there with our 2 year old son. We were in a truck and they were a few vehicles back from us. As we were all coming down around 3pm about a mile before you get to the Moon Cemetary there as a curve that was rutted and sloshy and everyone was climbing the left bank to keep out of the ruts when the grandfather did this the 4-wheeler tipped foward and went over on top of the little boys head. When the call came out from 911 we were already at the last hill going down. My husband took the paramedic up and the boy had already lost about 2 pints of blood. They think he was already brain dead from the impact on his skull. He was unresponsive and also had possible spinal injuries. They landed air-evac and lifted him the Huntsville Hospital where the family had to make the decision on Sunday to take him off life support because he was showing no signs of brain activity during the night. The child was only 9 years old. The grandfather is devastated. The little boys name is ( EDITED BY MODERATOR PENDING FORMAL RELEASE IN MEDIA). Very sad for the family. I'm sure the grandfather thought nothing of a helmet since they were just going on a slow ride in the woods. But that is no excuse for not using a helmet on a child.
I made the comment to my husband Saturday of all the 4-wheelers up there and maybe 10% of them had helmets. Anything can happen to anyone on the at anytime. Helmets should always be worn. I did see some very smart parents on a 4-wheeler who had strapped an actual car seat onto the back of the atv and then welded a removable roll cage on the back rack so that if an accident occured the child would be protected. They even had a helmet on the little girl.

Agree with Lee Anna. I feel for the parents.
ATV's can be very dangerous yet almost nobody including myself wears a helmet. It's a wonder I never got hurt back when I rode ATV's all the time. We did some stupid stuff, and never wore a helmet. Ironically, most of the ATV accidents I've seen have happened in the most unlikely places instead of on rough terrain.
Clint almost lost his life in an ATV accident when he was 10yrs old. He was hurt very badly and is blind in his left eye because of it. He wasn't doing anything stupid, just a feak accident.

Has the victim's name been released by the press? I ask because a google search nor a search on the AL.com Hsv Slime's site show any results of that name. If not, then it shouldn't be here either.

Good call Al. Since he's so young and it hasn't been released in the local media, let's keep his name out until that has been released, just for the family, etc.
It can be added back later if need be.
Very, very, sad.

Thanks Jake. I can't imagine losing Albin or Mary Etta at 9. Or at any age, for that matter. I took Albin on a four wheeler once when I was in the Clear Creek hunting club. We went up some pretty steep hill climbs exploring the place. There goes I but for the grace of God....

It wasn't meant to be sensitive, it was meant to get the point across that the little boys death could have been prevented. I like everyone else feel for the boy's parents and family.

Childs name has been released in local papers yesterday. I understand your concern with me posting his name and my apologies if it stepped over any privacy bounds. Funeral arrangements are being made today and you should be able to find his name in the huntsville times or al.com today or tomorrow. Very sad time for the family and community for losing such a young life.
