From slashdot:

"Ford has a vehicle that gets 65MPG and will not be released in the US. Why? Because they can not afford to! 'Ford's 2009 Fiesta ECOnetic goes on sale in November. But here's the catch: Despite the car's potential to transform Ford's image and help it compete with Toyota Motor (TM) and Honda Motor (HMC) in its home market, the company will sell the little fuel sipper only in Europe. "We know it's an awesome vehicle," says Ford America President Mark Fields. "But there are business reasons why we can't sell it in the U.S." The main one: The Fiesta ECOnetic runs on diesel.'"

EPA has set the diesel pollutant levels so high that they can only be met by very expensive methods like exhaust particulate traps, ULSD, computer controlled, variable pitch turbos $$$$

Of course we have diesels in the US (pre-2008 model year), but the NEW ones are the problem.  The EPA regs on the new diesel vehicles are so restrictive that most of the real high-mileage vehicles throughout the world wont meet the requirements.  Econazis screw us again.

One thing thats insane is that engine emisions are set by given RPM and fuel economy is not factored. So if a diesel vehicle has 20% more emisions than its gas counter part but gets 50% better fuel mileage the EPA still considers it to not pass, even though in a mile to mile comparison the diesel polutes 40% less. Nothing like the government to fix our problems.
