Hey guys,

I bought an XJ over the weekend. It's a 1994 4.0 auto Country edition. It's a 4 door 4wd. What is the difference in the Country editon versus the others. Also, I was looking at lifts around 3.5" and there are a ton of them. The Rubicon Express kit looked good with new lowers included. What's your opinion? I'm a Toyota guy, so I need some XJ schooling.

Thanks, V

The XJ Country is one of the upscale trim packages that include things like power windows and door locks.  Besides the 4.0L 6 cylinder they came with a Dana 30 front and a Chrysler 8.25 rear differentials and a NP 231 transfer case.  Some did come with a NP 242 transfer case that included a full-time 4wd feature.

takes alot more than you think to break a d30...

as for the lift... if all your going to do is drive it around and you want it to look good.

then dont waste your money on the RE lift. get a rustys or rough country lift

if you are wanting it to be multi purpose then go with the RE lift

find some larger joint front shafts out of a later model xj or tj

get a Slip yoke eliminator with that lift.

ditch the rear sway bar

and like jeremy said

check NAXJA.org... and use the search function... they have EVERYTHING about xjs

I'd pick another lift besides RE. I just put some RE control arms on my TJ, and wish I had purchased JKS instead. XJ is a great truck and I have owned many of them. I once saw an XJ pull two Toyotas hook  up in series out of a ditch in the snow on eastview drive Wink.

Oh, geez, not down that road again...  Tongue

OP, what are you wanting to use this XJ for?  I have, and I'm sure browning has learned a few things about XJ's that we'd probably do differently.  If you're only looking at 3.5" lifts that leads me to believe you aren't looking to do anything serious with this and only run 31" tires.  Yes I said that right.  You can cut and get bigger but it'll take me back to my original question...

well anything can break when your trying to break it. i was just saying that under normal offroading circumstances with 35" tires and under you have to romp on it to break the d30....

I have my solid axle full width Tacoma for the trails. The XJ is going to be my new daily driver and hunting rig. I bought it so I could quite driving the Tacoma to work everyday and finally be able to lock the rear end up again. On the XJ I just want around 3" of lift, 31's, and retain the factory ride quality.

Buying a Jeep to replace a Toyota as a daily driver, that's got to be a first for this board.  Carry an extra crank sensor with you.  Parts for XJs are plentiful so that's a plus.

85 Toyota pickup with 85lbs of bondo, 33" TSLs, Spool, Warn winch, 63" chevy's, Ruf, cage and other preowned parts.

Yeah, but I have a baby on the way and need a back seat these days. I stole the XJ, otherwise I would've bought a 4runner. However the inline 6 seems to be pretty strong.

Is it necessary to replace the lower links when going with a 3.5" lift? I see that a lot of kits do not include them.

No, you do not have to replace the lower links with a 3" or 3.5" lift.

For the little gain you will get from a 3.5" lift, I would almost rather do a budget boost for the money.  You'll probably get about the same size tire either way.

I have the rusty's lower arms, some nice TNT customs adjustable uppers that I had when I was running 4.5" lift on our XJ.  I'd be willing to sell if your interested.  You'll just need a pair of coils and whatever you want to run in the rear (shackles, add a leaf, replace leaf packs...)  I also have a lot of factory steering parts that I need to get rid of.

I don't know that I would buy a CPS to carry around since they can be $$$$ but there may come a day when it goes out.   It's a crap shoot either way.

The only reason I mentioned the Crank sensor is because I sell a lot of them at the parts store for the 4.0 engine, which are about $62.  Just a common thing that I've seen.

Congrats on the new addition!
