I never had any problem seeing my weld while stick welding but with the wire welder I need to have a pretty high ambient light level to be able to adequately see what I'm doing.

Is it just me and my tired old eyes or is this a common problem?

In order to work in my garage I need to set up a work light and either move the light around as I work on different areas of a project or reposition what I'm working on.

Has anyone tried this or something like it?
Is it worthwhile?  I'm tired of being limited to either welding in the driveway during the day and being subject to wind conditions or having to shuffle a shop light and/or project around in the garage.

I had the same problem the first time I used a MIG back when I was 30 something (pre-bifocal days).  I think the MIG arc is just a lot brighter than a stick.  I have an adjustable Jackson auto hood and I have never found a good setting for MIG.  If I can, I generally try to hide the brightest part of the arc slightly behind the nozzle and weld by the sound.

That light might help if it was bright enough.  Seems like it would also need replaceable lenses.

I have same issue.  I think its age and eyes.  Same hood, same eyes, over the course of several years as I have had to begin wearing reading glasses, the problem you describe has gotten a lot worse for me.  Welding with bifocals is a bitch.

What is wierd about the 2X magnifier lense is that I can look thru the top part of my bifocals and see very well.  I can't see thru the bottom part of my bifocals with the 2X lense.

When I started this thread I wondered how long it take before something like this got tossed in.

At least I haven’t gotten as bad as my best friend’s ex-wife’s granddaddy yet.  He cut a finger off his left hand on three separate occasions (3 total) before they finally took his B&D skill saw away from him.

I have this problem sometimes but I only have one eye and it gets blocked at times. I never found an auto helmet that I could really see out of. I still use the old style

I hate auto hoods for the type of welding I do. I use an old school jackson with the big lens. It makes it much easier to see when I'm up under a truck trying to weld something that you can barely see to begin with.
