From Slashdot:
Volvo will limit the top speed to 112mph on all its new cars from 2020 in an attempt to reduce the number of accidents. "The cap will prevent drivers from accelerating to the top speeds of up to 155mph many Volvos can reach," reports The Guardian. From the report: Volvo is believed to be the first carmaker to install the cap across its entire range. Police vehicles will be exempt. Similar technology has been installed on several high-performance cars in Germany, but at a much higher speed limit. The general speed limit for motorways in EU member states is 75-80mph (120-130km/h). Germany does not have a general cap for motorways but recommends a speed of up to 80mph. Speeding remained one of the main contributors to road deaths, Volvo said, along with drug and drink intoxication and mobile phone use. Volvo is also exploring how geofencing -- a virtual geographic boundary defined by GPS technology -- can be used to automatically limit speeds around schools and hospitals. Hakan Samuelsson, Volvo's president and chief executive, said: "While a speed limitation is not a cure-all, it's worth doing if we can even save one life. We want to start a conversation about whether carmakers have the right or maybe even an obligation to install technology in cars that changes their driver's behavior."
What's next?  Nope, can't spin the wheels.  Can't turn that sharply.  Can't accelerate that fast.  Can't lean the car over to the side that far.  What, there is no road here according to nav?  Then you can't go there.

Noticed the nav display on your new car, how it shows the posted speed limit on many roads now?  Soon you will not be able to exceed that speed.  I have begun to pay attention to this, and the posted speed often does not match what my nav display shows.

We had a 1984 Nissan 300ZX non-turbo.  The turbo version had a 137 mph speed limiter from the factory.

Yeah but the point was that Volvo is doing fleet wide speed limitations. Of course 112 will kill ya the same as 130. Volvo maybe trying to take back its uber safety reputation back from Subaru. Makes me wonder when all vehicles will be limited in the future?

From Slashdot:

Speed limiting technology looks set to become mandatory for all vehicles sold in Europe from 2022, after new rules were provisionally agreed by the EU. Road safety charity Brake called it a "landmark day," but the AA said "a little speed" helped with overtaking or joining motorways. Safety measures approved by the European Commission included intelligent speed assistance (ISA), advanced emergency braking and lane-keeping technology. The EU says the plan could help avoid 140,000 serious injuries by 2038 and aims ultimately to cut road deaths to zero by 2050. Under the ISA system, cars receive information via GPS and a digital map, telling the vehicle what the speed limit is. This can be combined with a video camera capable of recognizing road signs. The system can be overridden temporarily. If a car is overtaking a lorry on a motorway and enters a lower speed-limit area, the driver can push down hard on the accelerator to complete the maneuver.

I heard it can also be temporarily shut off by slamming on the brakes.  One person on the news said why own a Porsche if you can't go over the speed limit, I immediately thaought of you and Paul!!
