As much as the enviro-wonks would like you to believe otherwise, this program DOES support OHV trails.
===============

Recreational Trails Program (RTP) renewal: http://www.americantrails.org/rtp/ -

The SAFETEA-LU transportation legislation that authorizes the RTP expired September 30, 2009! To find out more about the possible reauthorization of the RTP, go to the website listed above for the latest information. Continuing resolutions have been passed by Congress so there is now 181/365th funding for federal fiscal year 2010.

The trails community is watching closely for the next federal Transportation Authorization bill which will affect the funding for ALL the trail related programs funded through the Federal Highway Administration.

The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, http://www.railstotrails.org/index.html - is supporting H. R. 4722. For more information about this bill and what it does, go to: http://www.railstotrails.org/ourWork/advocacy/activeTransportation/campaignForActiveTransportation/ACT_act.html - .

Loss of RTP funding has been an issue for the past 2-3 years. They have yet to fully authorize the legialation There have been multiple stop gap extensions of the SAFE-TEA for the past few years. The issue is that this is linked to the full transportation funding bill which has had issues getting support.

RTP is an important part for the funding of trails. Stony Lonesome is funded via RTP grants as have some other OHV areas nationwide. This is actually one piece of legislation that actually makes sense. Since off road recreation pays full gas taxes (meant to cover road maintenance/ construction), it only makes sense to refund that to allow for off highway trail use.
